New exhibit features work of Las Cruces artist

Apr 02, 2009

A new exhibit coming to the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum features the traditional paintings of a talented Las Cruces artist.

Retablo, Metamorphosis, Vision: The Art of Virginia Maria Romero will be on display in the Arts Corridor from April 10 through Aug. 2. The exhibit opens with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 10. Admission is free.

Romero's work, which mostly consists of paintings, is inspired by traditional retablo painting and has recently included more contemporary influences such as totem animals, including wolves and abstract natural forms. The show displays the evolution of her work.

Romero paints images and altars that take a more contemporary approach, while still maintaining the old tradition. Through her artwork, she has been able to create a visual bridge between the historical spirituality of the people of New Mexico, to the current issues that the people face today.
