SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Wandering Reflections: Photography by David Turning
DESCRIPTION:New Mexico’s beautiful\, rugged scenery is preserved in the images of Las Cruces photographer David Turning. \n“Wandering Reflections” is an exhibition at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum featuring 24 of Turning’s photographs. The show opens with an artist’s reception on Saturday\, December 16 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Admission to the reception is free and refreshments will be provided. \nThe exhibit includes color and black-and-white images from Turning’s collection. His landscape photographs are rich with texture\, featuring everything from the roughness of rocks\, thorns\, and tree branches\, to the softness of clouds\, fog\, and sand dunes. \n Turning says he simply photographs landscapes and other things that interest him. He grew up in Alamogordo where his passion for photography sparked when he “borrowed” his dad’s 35mm camera. In 2017\, drawn by the expanded possibilities newer digital cameras provide\, he upgraded from his pocket digital camera. \nEmbracing digital image processing\, Turning mastered the intricacies of image manipulation and enhancement. Now retired\, he finds joy in exploring nature and seizing moments through his camera\, portraying them uniquely through his lens. \n Turning’s show will be on display in the museum’s Arts Corridor through April 6\, 2024.

SUMMARY:BLESSING OF THE FIELDS
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum will celebrate an old tradition with the annual Blessing of the Fields procession on Friday\, May 17. \nAt 10 am\, the colorful procession around the Museum grounds begins with the blessing the animals\, plants\, and acequia. Visitors who come to the Museum to participate in the procession from 10 am to 11 am will not be charged admission. \nThe event begins with the Prayer of the Four Directions\, led by Patrick Narvaez\, and Cacique of Corporacion de los Indigines de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de Tortugas and Tortugas Pueblo. \nLeading the procession will be Most Reverend Peter Baldacchino\, Bishop of the Las Cruces Diocese. Students from Las Cruces Catholic Schools will be among the participants. \nThe bulto carried during the procession was created by Las Cruces artist Virginia Maria Romero. \nThe Museum will also have a plant sale as part of the festivities. Vegetables\, flowers and desert plants grown in the Museum’s greenhouse will be featured in the sale. \nThis marks the 24th year that the museum has held this program\, which focuses on a long and rich history. San Ysidro\, the patron saint of farmers\, lived from 1070 to 1130. He worked in the fields for a wealthy landowner and was known for his devotion to God\, his humility\, and his generosity to those less fortunate than him. \n  \nThe story of San Ysidro has been passed down through the generations and still inspires many farmers and their families in the Mesilla Valley. For many years\, workers in San Miguel would make a pilgrimage each May\, stopping at all the villages along the valley. \n  \nThe New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum is located at 4100 Dripping Springs Road in Las Cruces. For more information\, call (575) 522-4100.

SUMMARY:FRIENDS of the NMFRHM CULTURE SERIES: Mark Warren\, award-winning author
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the NMFRHM Culture Series presents \nMark Warren\, award-winning author \nNate Champion and the Johnson County War\, 1892 \nThursday\, October 24\, 2024 \n7 p.m.\, Museum Auditorium \nNew Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum \nFree Admission \nJUST ANNOUNCED: Mark Warren’s book A Last Serenade for Billy Bonney\, a novel on Billy the Kid has been awarded the New Mexico Book Co-op 2024 Book Award for Historical Fiction – New Mexico. \nWarren has researched the American West for more than 60 years. He lectures on Native American history and survival skills\, and Western Frontier history presenting at museums and cultural centers around the country. He is a member of the Wild West History Association\, Western Writers of America\, and the Historical Novel Society. His Wyatt Earp\, An American Odyssey trilogy was honored by WWA’s Spur Awards\, The Historical Novel Society\, and the Will Rogers Medallion Awards. Warren was a Georgia Author of the Year recipient for his book Song of the Horseman (Finalist\, Literary Fiction). Indigo Heaven\, The Westering Trail Travesties\, and his short story\, The Cowboy\, The Librarian and The Broomsman\, were Will Rogers Medallion Award winners. Warren’s latest work\, a duology on Nate Champion\, Nate\, The Texas Story\, and Nate\, The Wyoming Story are available everywhere books are sold. \nAll of Mr. Warren’s books will be available for sale and signing during this event. \nPerhaps the most egregious chapter of the cattle industry occurred in Wyoming\, where Texan Nate Champion became one of the unsung heroes of American history. After traveling to the Powder River Basin to stake his claim as an independent rancher\, Nate finds himself thrown into the crucible of the Johnson County War\, in which he unknowingly prevented the crime of the century (outside of Indian affairs) and became a martyr to the common laborer. Join us to find out about one of the greatest last stands in our country’s annals.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: New Mexico AgrAbility
DESCRIPTION:New Mexico AgrAbility sheds light on how farmers and ranchers with disabilities in rural areas overcome challenges to maintain their livelihoods and agricultural production. \nAn opening reception will be held in the Traditions and Legacy galleries on Jan. 23 at 1:00 p.m. Admission to the reception is free\, but regular admission applies to the Museum. \nVisitors can engage with stories about farmers and ranchers who have overcome physical and mental challenges in their pursuit of their agricultural careers. The exhibit features a tractor simulator\, which is an actual cab of a tractor designed for individuals with physical barriers\, fiberglass cows\, and a hoop house to immerse the visitors in what AgrAbility is all about. \nAgrAbility is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program to assist farmers\, food growers\, and farm families who are touched by a disability\, chronic health problem\, or just getting older\, which affects their ability to take part in an agricultural lifestyle. Imagine having a leg prosthesis and trying to drive a farm tractor\, or a bad back and trying to ride a horse to round up cattle. People have overcome those challenges with help from the AgrAbility program. \n\nRead Full Press Release
