SUMMARY:Culture Series: Big Cats of New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Mountain lion research in New Mexico is the subject of the next Culture Series at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. \n  \nThe “Big Cats of New Mexico” presentation at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 is organized and hosted by the Friends of the Museum. Admission is free. \n  \nDr. Travis Perry\, a biology professor at Furman University in Greenville\, S.C.\, will talk about his New Mexico mountain lion research\, meaningful outdoor education\, and creating a field station in the Gila National Forest. In 2021\, Dr. Perry founded Natural Curiosity\, a nonprofit based in Hillsboro\, N.M. that created the station for hands-on education\, back-country skills\, and conservation research in the Gila. \n  \nAs a community ecologist\, Dr. Perry’s interests are quite broad as reflected in his research with Furman students on species as diverse as the bunched arrowhead (endangered plant) to spotted salamanders to meadow voles to desert bighorn sheep. \n  \nDr. Perry thrives on engaged teaching\, giving students first-hand experience in the subject matter. He believes that these are the academic experiences\, more than any others\, that change lives. He has introduced students to the wilderness of New Mexico\, the South African bush\, the tropical forests of Costa Rica\, and the natural environments of South Carolina. Perry feels his greatest professional achievement as an educator has been the design and implementation of Furman University’s Wild Semester\, a conservation biology study-away program.

SUMMARY:The Dairy Spot Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:The dairy barn at the Museum has a new look\, a new name\, and lots of fun\, new activities and exhibits. \nThe Dairy Spot: Discovery Center opens to the public with a special celebration on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Caliche’s Frozen Custard will be on site to provide a free 5-ounce serving to the first 500 visitors\, and guests are invited to make their own ice cream using Ziplock bags. Milking and other demonstrations also are part of the fun. Regular admission applies ($5 for adults\, $4 for senior citizens\, and $3 for children 4 to 17)\, and it includes all the Museum’s regular offerings. \nWith this renovation\, The Dairy Spot: Discovery Center will continue to share New Mexico’s dairy history but will be more child-friendly and have more interactive exhibits. This brighter\, livelier venue includes a multi-use public space that can be used for everything from demonstrations to children’s birthday parties. \nThe Southwest Dairy Farmers’ $30\,000 donation to the Museum last year made the renovation possible. \nVisitors to The Dairy Spot will enjoy videos of ice cream making\, the process of pasteurization\, and farm to table. Some of the topics featured in The Dairy Spot are the breeds of dairy cattle\, sources of milk from around the world\, a cow’s anatomy\, nutrition\, cheese\, ice cream\, butter\, and lots of fun facts. Among the interactives are a butter churn\, a cheese fridge\, and an “I spy” activity featuring a house with various dairy products.
