SUMMARY:Culture Series: Billy the Kid
DESCRIPTION:“Our Favorite Outlaw of the American West: Billy the Kid” is the title of a special edition of the monthly Culture Series. \nAward-winning author Mark Warren is the speaker for this free presentation in the Farm & Ranch Museum’s theater at 7 p.m. on Monday\, October 30. The Culture Series is hosted by the Friends of the Museum. \nIn the late 19th century\, a young man named Henry McCarty changed his name to William H. Bonney and became one of the best-known historical characters of our Western mythology. Who was this young Irish lad who was so loved by the Hispanic community of the Southwest? Warren presents the lesser known facts about Billy the Kid’s life and the war-torn land that he loved to give an audience a new understanding of the dichotomous nature of history. One person’s “bad man” is another person’s “good guy.” \nMark Warren is an award-winning author\, educator\, and Western historian. He lectures on Native American history and survival skills\, and Western Frontier History presenting at museums and cultural centers around the country. He has been honored by the Spur Awards\, The Historical Novel Society\, the Will Rogers Medallion Awards\, the Peacemaker Awards\, and most recently\, Warren was a recipient of a 2022 Georgia Author of the Year Award for his book Song of the Horseman. \nWarren’s books will be available for sale and signing following the lecture\, including “A Last Serenade for Billy Bonney.” \nThe presentation is being held in conjunction with the museum’s ongoing exhibit\, “Riding Herd with Billy the Kid: The Rise of the Cattle Industry in New Mexico.” The Museum’s Billy the Kid sculpture by Las Cruces artist Bob Diven will be moved to the lobby to be displayed on the evening of this lecture.
